ASTM D 4242-2017 “Tilting Plate Fluidity of Thermoset Powder Coatings”

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 The test method can be used to select coating powders with similar melt flow characteristics at minimum shear forces. It is not recommended to use it as an absolute measure, but as a comparative measure for samples measured simultaneously on the same panel.

Scope of
1.1 This test method specifies a method for determining the flow characteristics of a molten thermoset paint powder along a plane inclined in a horizontal direction. This test indicates the degree of melt flow that may occur during the curing of the paint powder. This property contributes to coating coherence, surface appearance and coverage of sharp edges (see test method D2967), however, it should not be used as a factor in judgment. This test is a useful way to check for batch-to-batch variation in the behavior of a given paint powder. There was no correlation between the results for the different composition of paint powders. This method is unlikely to yield meaningful results for paint powders with a gel time of less than one minute at the test temperature (see test method D4217). Oven ventilation, tilt Angle, and particle variation can significantly affect the results, making inter-laboratory reproducibility difficult to correlate.
