ASTM D 5150-92-2017 Determination of the Hiding Power of Architectural Coatings by Roller Construction

Meaning and Purpose
5.1 Laboratory covering power measurement of architectural coatings usually uses blade coaters, which can lay films of a height and uniform thickness. However, practical applicators such as rollers, MATS, and brushes often apply films that lack uniformity due to incomplete leveling, resulting in the actual hiding power of most coatings being lower than the measured ability of films coated using drafting blades. The test method simulates real applications and conditions in order to indicate the actual hidden performance that can be obtained when painted by an experienced worker. It’s not about replicating paintings like the average consumer.

5.2 Rank-order correlations between this test and those completed by retracement may not be obtained as rheological properties of the paint and its interaction with the applicator are influencing factors.

Scope of
1.1 This test method measures the ability of a paint to hide or block its surface through a practical application. The test method covers the use of paint rollers, but the concept is expected to be equally effective when the applied tool is a paint brush or a paint pad.

1.2 Values expressed in inch-pounds should be considered standard values. The values given in parentheses are mathematical transformations of SI units and are for reference only and are not considered standard.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

1.4 This international Standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally recognized standardization principles established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations issued by the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of the World Trade Organization.
