ASTM G9-07-2020 Standard Test Method for Water Permeability of Pipe Coatings

Meaning and Purpose

4.1 The deterioration of insulation coating is closely related to its moisture content. Water permeability testing provides a means of monitoring the passage of water through a coating material by its change in dielectric constant. When expressed in time, the test data will reflect the rate of deterioration of the coating material properties and will be correlated with its expected service life as an insulating coating. Water penetration testing will also provide information that will help determine a better coating thickness for a given material.

Scope of

1.1 This method consists of determining the apparent depth rate of water penetration into the insulating coating applied to the pipe.

1.2 Values expressed in SI units are treated as standards. The values given in parentheses are for reference only.

1.3 This standard is not intended to address all safety issues, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
