Although traffic coatings can remain uniform for weeks or months, some coatings can layer and become uneven over time. Obtaining representative samples can be challenging, especially in a field setting. The required method for obtaining a liquid sample is to mix the sample well until uniform and then sample the mixture from the top. If complete mixing cannot be verified, an alternative is to obtain the sample using a liquid tube sampling device. These devices are capable of capturing the paint core from top to bottom from the container. An internal or external rod-tube sampler is recommended for sample extraction. The internal rod tube sampler is the preferred sampler.

1.2 The practice of selecting representative samples shall be agreed in writing between the parties supplying the product and the parties testing the product.
